Fact Checking Glenn Beck

I'm holding my nose, but here goes.

From A Tiny Revolution, I have a transcript of part of Glenn Beck's Lincoln Memorial speech/sermon*:

Behind you, in front of me, the Washington—alone, tall, straight—if you look at the Washington Monument, you might notice its scars. But nobody talks about that...but a quarter of the way up it changes color. Did you know that it did? Look at it. Look at its scars.

How did the scar get there? They stopped building it in the Civil War. And when the war was over, they began again. No one sees the scars of the Washington memorial, the Washington Monument. We see what it stands for. No one also talks about what's on top, facing east. Just two words, "Laus Deo," "Praise be to God."

I have no idea what point Beck is trying to make.

Maybe he's trying to present the Washington Monument as something that transcended a racial divide, since he decided to hold his event on the anniversary of Martin Luther King's "I Have A Dream" speech.

But it doesn't really matter what point he's trying to make. Because at the heart of his anecdote, Beck is historically-challenged just like his fellow GOP compatriot Newt Gingrich.

Would Beck have had to go very far to find out why the Washington Monument has two colors? Only as far as the National Park Service website:

Why does the color change on the outside of the monument?

When the monument was under construction in 1854, the Washington National Monument Society ran out of money and the project ground to a halt. Twenty-five years later, the U.S. Government took over and completed the upper two-thirds of the structure by 1884 using marble from a different quarry. The two sections closely resembled each other at first, but time, wind, rain, and erosion have caused the marble sections to weather differently, thereby producing the difference in color.

In case American history wasn't your strong suit (it certainly wasn't Beck's), the Civil War was 1860-1865.

But there is an interesting political twist, one with modern parallels.

In 1852, construction stopped at the 156-foot level when the project ran out of money. Two years later, "'Know Nothing' political activists took over the uncompleted monument for two years." And who were the "Know Nothings", a pejorative term for the American Party?

Its members strongly opposed immigrants and followers of the Catholic Church... The Know-Nothing Party intended to prevent Catholics and immigrants from being elected to political offices. Its members also hoped to deny these people jobs in the private sector, arguing that the nation's business owners needed to employ true Americans.

The majority of Know-Nothings came from middle and working-class backgrounds. These people feared competition for jobs from immigrants coming to the United States.

[...]

Nationally, in 1856, the American Party ran Millard Fillmore as its candidate for President of the United States. While Fillmore finished last, he still received almost 900,000 votes out of the approximately four million votes cast in the election.... The party did not run a candidate for president in [the 1860] election, as many of its followers had joined the Republican Party.

Where do we hear the rhetoric of "true Americans" today? You know, the only ones who can count on the First Amendment. Where do we hear fearful rhetoric about immigration?

Right. The Republican Party.

What's ironic is that the Republican Party of the 19th century was an anathema to the South, which threatened to secede should a Republican be elected President, but today it is the party of the South.

What a transformation in my lifetime.

So Mr. Beck, just which of these parallels were you thinking about when you decided to talk about the Washington Monument on Saturday? Or were you simply blowing smoke?

* People who talk like this, in my experience, are preachers. Not journalists.

The truth is like a fire. I told you, you've got to stand in the blaze of truth and everything else will burn around you.

And this:

For too long, this country has wandered in darkness.

Kathy, this for your reading and use.

I first wanted a quick definition of Liberation Theology. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberation_theology

Then I wondered about Mormon vs Christianity

http://www.irr.org/mit/is-mormonism-christian.html

7. Does Christ's Atoning Death Benefit Those Who Reject Him?

The Bible teaches and orthodox Christians through the ages have believed that the purpose of the atoning work of Christ on the cross was to provide the complete solution for humankind’s sin problem. However, those who reject God’s grace in this life will have no part in this salvation but are under the judgment of God for eternity (John 3:36; Hebrews 9:27; 1 John 5:11-12).

By contrast, the Mormon Church teaches that the purpose of the atonement was to bring resurrection and immortality to all people, regardless of whether they receive Christ by faith. Christ’s atonement is only a partial basis for worthiness and eternal life, which also requires obedience to all the commands of the Mormon church, including exclusive Mormon temple rituals (Gospel Principles, pp. 74-75; Mormon Doctrine, p. 669)

This made me wonder about Mormon’s and Liberation Theology.

http://mormongandhi.com/2009/05/17/mormon-liberation-theology/

The biblical notion of salvation is equated with the process of liberation from oppression and injustice. Sin is defined in terms of man’s inhumanity to others. Liberation theology for all practical purposes equates loving your neighbor with loving God. The two are not only inseparable but virtually indistinguishable. King Benjamin’s sermon in the Book of Mormon explains that ‘when ye are in the service of your fellow beings, ye are only in the service of your God’ (Mosiah 2:17).

http://www.gandhitopia.org/profiles/blogs/what-is-latter-day-satyagraha

For those familiar with the LDS faith, the differences between being a Satyagrahi and a Latter Day Saint are not many. It could be argued in fact that the only difference is that the Satyagrahi is committed to non-violence and the Latter Day Saint is not, in the contrary. Having struggled over the years with the war rhetoric and the military imagery all-too-known and still actively in use in the LDS faith, I set on a quest to develop a LATTER DAY SATYAGRAHA that would bring the unique ideas and beliefs of mormonism with Gandhi's life and teachings.

Obviously, all religions/beliefs have their supporters, distractors, and variations. Claiming purity and pointing fingers can be very arrogant.

Sorry, got started with the tie in of Liberty Theology to Mormans, and the irony of Beck pointing fingers at the Pres and did not know where to stop! Not my normal type of comment.

Oh! No need to apologize - I wasn't being critical of your post. I was being critical of these finely drawn lines of differentiation.

Great article Kathy. I have to confess, it never occurred to me to question the comment about the Washington Monument, and I've been there a thousand times. OMG -- I'm a sheeple... Help!!!

*giggle*

But seriously ... what does it say about this man that he so egregiously rewrites history?? And do you have any idea of the point he was trying to make?

I honestly don't think he has a point. I think he talks in riddles, using well-known symbols to ignite and fuel the public's fear.

Other than this article, I've only voted up one other on Beck and his rally, because I don't want to increase awareness of his rhetoric - and I truly think that's all it is. The other one was seeded by killfile -- a video of people being interviewed at the rally, and I have to say, that despite traveling the world and living in a war zone, that video is the scariest thing I've ever seen.

Here's an even more interesting tidbit that might tickle your funny bone. Beck uses the Washington Monument to make a reference to the Christian God of course since that is what he preaches when in fact, the Washington Monument is in fact the tallest obelisk in the world and obelisks are decidedly non Christian.

If Beck had done his research instead of being an ignorant fool he would have never pointed to the Washington Monument because by doing that he's practically blaspheming. Why? Because obelisks date back to Egyptian mythology and in fact, obelisks were used to worship the sun god Ra.

It's scary that a guy like that commands so much respect and power. But then again, people still follow Palin despite her being as dumb as a bag of brick so no surprise LOL.

Andrew, on this I can be proud of my neighbors. Despite the area's conservative tendencies, I don't know of anyone who thinks the Washington Monument is a christian symbol. Of course, we also don't recognize it as a symbol from Egyptian mythology. Mostly, we follow the "redneck" interpretation, which I'll leave to your subconscious. (And I can use the term Redneck, because I qualify -- LOL.)

I be one, too. ;-)

That's another great point, Andrew, one I'd forgotten. Here's some background on the obelisk:

The obelisk is, to quote McDowell and Meyer in The Revival Styles in American Memorial Art, one of the "most pervasive of all the revival forms" of cemetery art. There is hardly a cemetery founded in the 1840s and 50s without some form of Egyptian influence in the public buildings, gates, tomb art, etc. Napoleon's 1798-99 Egyptian campaigns, the discoveries at the tombs of the Pharaohs, and our new Republic's need to borrow the best of the ancient cultures (Greek revival, classic revival, the prominence of classical studies and dress, etc.) led to a resurgence of interest in the ancient Egyptian culture. Obelisks were considered to be tasteful, with pure uplifting lines, associated with ancient greatness, patriotic, able to be used in relatively small spaces, and, perhaps most importantly, obelisks were less costly than large and elaborate sculpted monuments. There were many cultural reasons for the revival styles of the nineteenth century. Freemasonry, while part of the overall cultural influence, was not responsible for the prevalence of obelisks. If you would like to read more about some of these styles, see The Egyptian Revival: Its Sources, Monuments and Meaning, 1808-1859, by Richard Carrott.

Kathy- Terrific article!

When Hubby & I were watching something-Bones, maybe?-on the telly, I paused it when there was a good picture of the Washington Monument and asked hubby if he knew why it was two different colors...He'd NEVER noticed!!

I explained to him the reason-and my version was the correct one, not the Beck one! :)

Good for you! I didn't realize the two-tone would be evident on TV.

It does look like if he's opening his mouth, the odds are good that a falsehood is coming out. Here's another one from the same speech.
